Colorado Rocketry Association of Space Hobbyists

Club Launch Rules and Range Procedures

1.

Range Officers:
   a.
Every launch will have a Launch Control Officer (LCO) and a Range Safety Officer (RSO) on duty at all times. These duties may be handled by a single individual as the situation permits. These positions will be assigned as required by the attending club officers. These duties may be reassigned periodically during the launch. No launches may proceed without a club officer or assigned representative at the launch.

b.

The RSO will control all flight cards and pad assignments, and is responsible for range safety. The LCO will handle all launch operations. The decisions of the RSO and LCO are final.

2.

Model and Engine Requirements:
a.

All models must conform to the 3.3 pound (1500 gram) maximum flight weight and 4.0 ounce (125 gram) propellant weight regulations imposed by the FAA.

b.

Only NAR certified motors are to be used at this site. See the NAR Web Site for the current certified engine lists.

c.

All models will conform to the NAR Safety Code and any applicable federal, state or local regulations.

d.

The RSO and/or LCO has the right to disallow the flight of any model due to safety concerns. No arguing with the decisions of the LCO or RSO is allowed.

3.

Rocket Preparation:

a.

Prepare rockets for launch at your vehicle. All rocket models should have a recovery system (i.e. parachute, streamer, glide recovery, etc.).

b.

When wadding is required, it must be of a flame retardant material. Tissue paper or paper towels are not allowed to be used as recovery wadding.

c.

Make sure an appropriate motor is used. (you must remember the installed motor designation and it's delay for the flight card - i.e. C6-5). Please be sure to use some form of retention to keep motor(s) with the rocket.

d.

If you have any questions about construction or preparing a rocket for flight, see the Range Safety Officer, Launch Control Officer, or an experienced club member for help.

4.

Flight Check-in:

a.

Fill out a flight card completely for each flight. Bring the flight card and prepped model to the RSO for inspection and pad assignment. The pad assignment will be indicated on the flight card by the RSO.

b.

Place rocket on the assigned launch rod. Models with propellant weights higher than 62.5 grams must be flown from the far pads.

5.

Launch Procedures:

a.

The Launch Control Officer will announce "the Range is closed." At this time NO ONE is to enter the launch area until the range is reopened.

b.

After each flight is announced and an appropriate countdown, rockets are launched in succession, usually one at a time, in pad order. The LCO may make changes at his/her own discretion.

c.

You may push the button to launch your own rocket. Just notify the LCO.

d.

Please pay attention to all rockets being launched from "lift-off" to deployment of recovery system, or "touch down" if the model appears to be landing near the spectator area. If a model has a flight which results in a landing before all ejection charges have deployed, the range will be shut down and the model and landing area inspected immediately for potential fire hazards. The range will not be reopened until the landing area is deemed safe.

e.

Once all rockets are launched, please wait for RSO to state "Range is Open", before entering the range.

6.

Park Rules:
a.

The Bear Creek Lake Park officials have asked that NO ONE launch rockets in the park on days and times that C.R.A.S.H. is not holding a scheduled launch.

b.

The Park officials have also asked that people not climb on or over the dam to play or retrieve rocket models. If a model does go over the dam, please ask the club officers for directions on retrieving the model.

Anyone who doesn't conform with the above rules or the decisions of the RSO or LCO will be asked to leave the launch area.

Additional Notes:

Please park your vehicle along the fenced line, not in the middle of the parking lot.

Please wear proper attire, use sun block, and bring plenty to drink!

Please pick up any trash you run across in the park, particularily any rocketry related items. We need to continue to assure the park officials that our hobby is a clean activity.
